According to Palette scrapings, vol. 3, no. 1 (Jan. 1884) the original painting was then being made for Mather by Frank Green of Chicago, with Mather posing as Juliet and Alessandro Salvini as Romeo. Large chromolithographs of the painting survive as advertising posters for her performances.
