Note
Artist: Carter was an architectural draughtsman and antiquarian who published several works on ancient architecture in Great Britain. The signatures on the items may be in the hand of the person who formed the volume rather than in the hand of Carter.
Drawings are labeled and signed either underneath or on verso. The second drawing is dated 1782.
History: These watercolor drawings are identical in design to three line engravings which were published as plates to Carter's Specimens of gothic architecture and ancient buildings in England, London, E. Jeffrey and Son, 1824. The prints in the edition are variously dated and the volume is pocket size. The engravings are therefore much smaller than the original watercolors found in this volume. The imprints on the engravings note that the designs were sketched in 1782 and engraved and published by Carter in 1787. Copies of the engravings can be found in FSL ART Vol. b22, nos. 88a, 91c, and 115b. Cataloger has been unable to examine a copy of the third volume of Specimen's of gothic architecture which contains the prints, but have seen them listed in the contents of the work.
Provenance: Items are glued into a volume which is labeled "Warwickshire, engravings and original drawings." For provenance information see entry for "Anonymous. Wollas Hall, co. Warwick."
