Note
Artist: Neale was an architectural draughtsman who published several works in collaboration with the engraver John Le Keux. According to the DNB his '...reputation rests on his architectural drawings which were executed carefully with pen and tinted with watercolors'.
History: Sketches appear to be early drafts of drawings later engraved by Le Keux for the work 'Views of the most interesting ... churches in Great Britain ...' London : Longman, Hurst, etc., 1824-1825. The date 1825 on the sketchbook confused this issue, however, since the plates in the published volume are dated 1824. The sketches do match the finished plates in design. A description of the Stratford church was published separately in 1825 by Sherwood, Jones of London, also containing the work of Neale and Le Keux (listed in NUC). FSL has a copy of the first work (NA 5461 N4) but lacks a copy of the separate work.
Items have been inlaid to thick sheets of paper and bound together with a title on the spine reading: Sketches taken by J. P. Neale at Stratford. 1825. Item no.4 is dated July 1825 and labeled as to subject. The rest are unlabeled though some have faded pencil notations on them and none are signed.
Provenance: Item is listed as no.286 in the Halliwell, Phillips Calendar of Shakespeare rarities .. 1891. Entry attributes the binding to F. Bedford. Item was purchased by the Folgers as part of the Marsden J. Perry - Halliwell-Phillips Collection in 1908.
Published Work: Neale, John Preston. Views of the ... churches in Great Britain ... London, Longman, Hurst, etc., 1824-25.
Subject: Sketches depict the following views of the church: 1 & 3) Interior of the Chancel showing Shakespeare's and other monuments. 2) Interior view of the North Aisle. 4) Shakespeare's font and the stone base of the Old Market Cross of Stratford-upon-Avon. 5 & 6) Views of the exterior.
