Artist: Pegram was known as a black and white artist and illustrator who was prolific in the work he did for magazine illustrations. He illustrated for most of the major arts magazines of his day.
History: These illustrations were probably reproduced in a magazine of the 1900s possibly Lady's pictorial or something in this vein. There is a note concerning the amount of reduction to be taken on the back of the ink wash drawing.
Provenance: Both items were purchased by the Folgers from Henry Sotheran in 1905 along with numerous magazine illustrations by various artists.
Subject: The production illustrated was performed, under the direction of H.B. Tree, at Her Majesty's Theatre in 1900. The members of the cast are given under the drawings as follows: Julia Neilson as Oberon, Sarah Brook as Hermia, Lewis Waller as Lysander, Beerbohm Tree as Bottom, Maud Tree as Titania, Miss Louie Freear as Puck, The production opened Jan. 10, 1900.
The ink wash drawing is labeled Act II and portrays Bottom waking to find Titania in his lap, four sprites surround them and Puck is tickling his ear. Oberon is watching from the far left and Hermia and Lysander are sleeping, also at left. The picture is labeled with the names of the actors and is signed in the bottom right 'Fred Pegram 1900' (ART Box P376 no.8). The pen and ink drawing shows Puck placing the asses head on Bottom while he sleeps. Titania and Oberon are watching. The actors names are given below and the work is signed but not dated (ART Box P376 no.2).
