Summary
Drawings depict Garrick as Richard in a surprised state on a bed. Both were executed with a light penciled grid over the surface, as though the artist were copying from another work, possibly to transfer for engraving. The two drawings are mirror images of each other.

The painting with which these drawings may be identified was done by William Hogarth and published as an engraving June 20, 1746 under the title "Garrick in the Character of Richard III, Act 5, Sc. 7, engraved by William Hogarth and C. Grignion". The portrait was engraved several times after 1746 by a number of other engravers (i.e. T. Cook, E. Portbury, Dent, and A. Romanet). FSL has several versions of the engraving.
Both Folger copies are labeled with the title on verso as well as pencil notations "1013" and "C". Unsigned. Drawings measure 15 1/4 x 18 3/4 in. and 16 1/4 x 20 3/4 in.
Provenance: Items were purchased from a sale by the American Art Association of works comprising the private library of Dr. William M. Conant of Boston, Mass. and other properties, held Nov. 27, 1923. Items are listed as no. 444 in the catalog of the sale as two original drawings in pencil (unsigned) of Garrick in the character of Richard III. Items are entered in the sale catalog under the heading [Shakespeare, William]
