Abstract
"Predicting that 'thy eternal summer shall not fade,' Shakespeare offered words of praise as lovely as any pair of green eyes. But every rose bears thorns, and the poet as often smote his subjects as caressed them. In the midst of his romances, tragedies, comedies, and historical theatrics, buffoons and princes step in the way of memorable maledictions, brutal affronts to their pride, and some of the most scurrilous insinuations ever to be hurled across a stage. Shakespeare's Insults presents 313 brief but blistering excerpts from the greatest dramas in the language (weekends receive a single barb). Each passage is accompanied by an explanation of who is abusing whom, and archaic words are glossed"--back of outer box.
