Scope and content
Order dated August 4, 1685, to pay the King's jeweler £1330 for a number of specified pieces, including a "Jewell of Diamonds" for the envoy extraordinary from the Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuettel, and jewels given by the king to envoys extraordinary, from the Duke of Savoy, the Duchess of Modena, and the Duke of Brandenburg. The order was based on a Privy Seal letter dated March 31, 1685, and authorized by a letter from the Earl of Arlington dated May 13, 1685.
Note
At the bottom and verso of document, Mr. Chudleigh (deputy to Mr. Clifford) and Mr. Villiers are ordered to make three separate payments out of excise money, dated August 12, 1685 (£300), August 31, 1685 (£1000), and September 28, 1685 (£30). Signed by the Earl of Rochester, J. Ernle, and R. Howard.
