Depicts the first of the seven ages of man (the infant), from Jacques' speech in Act 2, sc. 7 of As you like it. See ART Box D221 no.2 for an ink wash drawing by Darley of the same scene, with some variations.

History: Drawing is part of a series of designs done for the 'Darley gallery of Shakespearean illustration' (published in 1884) which was made up of 30 illustrations to Shakespeare's plays. This drawing, however, was never reproduced for the printed edition.
