Date based on Bell's own dating of some of his other drawings for The tempest.
This drawing was done for Bell's decorated edition of Shakespeare's Tempest, published by Freemantle & Co. in 1901. For a copy of the published work see: PR 2833 1901 Sh.Col.
Penned note beneath image reads "p. 19 - to face Ariel." In the published book this drawing appears on page 19, as an illustration to act 1, scene 2, opposite the drawing of Ariel as a water-nymph (see ART Box B433 no.19 for this drawing).
