Title
The annals of King Charles [manuscript], compiled early 18th century?.
Description
12 v.
Associated name
Scope and content
Manuscript history of Charles I's reign from 1625-1641, consisting of a massive compilation of documents intended as a connected history of the reign. Written in ink in several scribal hands, mostly on recto only of each leaf leaving verso blank (in most cases) for the compiler's or editor's notes, corrections, additions, etc. in single editor's hand. The compiler references other historians, mostly in additional notes, including Laurence Echard (History of England 1707-18), Roger Coke (Detection of the Court, 1694), John Nalson (Impartial collection of the great affairs of state, 1682-3) and John Rushworth (Historical Collections, 1659-1701). Foreign writers are also scoured for their opinions, and the notes include reference to the histories of England by Larrey (1697-13) and Orleans (1693-4). If these are additions from newly-acquired sources it is very probable that the manuscript was being compiled in the early years of the 18th century.
Note
Vols. 1-10 foliated 1-4772 (with a least 1 jump in foliation, from 4307-4388). Towards end of v. 10, foliated leaves 4567-4772 are also paginated (only on leaves with manuscript writing) 1 through 404, and apparently p. 405 is lacking as v.11 picks up with p. 406. Vols.11-12 paginated only. Vols.1, 4 and 11 have manuscript indexes, some on loose sheets. Evidence of cropping throughout indicates the manuscript was bound after being written. From England or possibly Ireland.
