Autograph letter signed from François-Victor Hugo to unidentified recipient [manuscript], after 1855 July 17 Friday.
Description
2 leaves ; 21 x 14 cm
Associated name
Scope and content
Hugo cannot find the new address of the recipient's brother, a Monsieur Montague, who had asked about the "affaire de Jersey." Asks that the recipient forward information he had received from Jersey concerning the attempted bribery of a Jersey policeman, George Henley. Also mentions that he has been correcting the proofs of Hamlet, which will appear the following month.
Language Note
In French.
Note
The incident described occured during a riot following the "Indignation Meeting," held October 13, 1855 in the town of St. Helier, Jersey, to effect the suppression of the Jersey newspaper, L'Homme, which had published an open letter from Felix Pyat to Queen Victoria.
