Originally an unfinished Latin commonplace book, with brief quotations under such headings as Virtus, Mors, Philopohia; later, and perhaps over a long period, filled with recipes, including medical formularies, in many hands.

Missing first few leaves.
It has been claimed that the Latin entries are in John Locke's hand, but Peter Laslett (Trinity College, Cambridge) thinks not.

The book appears to have come from the Masham Family of Oates (Essex), where John Locke lived.
