(1), a poem entitled The oak, an ode to Shakespeare, has the first line Oak! thou proud Pharos of a thousand years and includes a watercolor of an oak. (2) is a painting, possibly depicting Shakespeare invoking his characters. (3) a "Motto for Darwin's Loves of the plants" is written on the back of a fragment of an invitation and has the first line The chastest Virgins erst they shone. (4) is a bifolium to which two leaves have been attached: a watercolor of Miss Elisa Smart and a poem entitled The hot days in August 1780 with the first line O tis a fiery sky - tis all a blaze.
