Note
"Alan Halliday, 2002 - Joseph Fiennes as Orlando in a Royal Shakespeare Company production of 'As You Like It' - drawn in dress rehearsal at The Royal Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon" written by artist on verso.
Joseph Fiennes is credited with playing Silvius, not Orlando, in this production. From correspondence with the artist, in curatorial file, "Victoria Hamilton, who was scheduled to play Rosalind, was injured and her understudy (previously playing Phebe) was on for the dress rehearsal. Because she had been rehearsing with Joseph Fiennes (previously Silvius) and was used to playing with him, they put him on too as Orlando. Whether he played this in performance as well, I don't know since the RSC would not give out which sort of information."
"The paintings are made in two stages on the same sheet of paper: all the drawing in black ink is made in the theatre during the dress rehearsal; the paint is added from memory at a later date; and the inscriptions after that." -- Correspondence with the artist, 22 Oct. 2009, in curatorial file.
Gift of the artist.
