Scope and content
Contains copies of 140 letters and other documents originally written between 1582 and ca. 1614, in two distinct hands. Letters and other material are of political and literary importance, some personal and ephemeral. Correspondents and recipients include but not limited to George Chapman, Ben Jonson, Earl of Essex, Elizabeth I, Francis Bacon, Robert Cecil, John Dowland, and Peter Ferryman, in addition to many unidentified individuals. Material relating to the Earl of Essex is on leaves 1-13, arranged approximately in chronological order. Other documents include: invitations to dinner; partial and complete transcripts of Privy Council warrants; speeches; petitions for jobs, for justice and for money; and a copy of a House of Commons petition of right.
Note
Possibly compiled by Peter Ferryman, a few of the letters are to or from him as well as him being acquainted with many of the letter writers in the volume. Compilation has also been ascribed to George Chapman, see Dobell Athenaeum, 1901, p. 369, 403, 433 and 465.
