Scope and content
Collections from which Capell's Notes and various readings, vol. 3, were compiled. The chief contents are: (1) a great number of extracts from almost all Elizabethan plays and a great number of nondramatic works, chosen with a view to illustrating Shakespeare's language, and (2) bibliographical descriptions of almost all English plays printed before 1668. The whole contents are entirely without any apparent attempt at orderly arrangement. The date "Sept. 16. 1752," written beneath the title at the front of vol. 1, is assumed to be the date of the beginning. The date Jan. 8, 1766 is written near the end of the last volume (S.b.12), Col. 1069. The whole is in Capell's autograph.
