Part of the work was "originally written in ... the Scottish language during 1568-70 ... for the perusal of Queen Mary, to whom it was presented in 1571." This Scottish portion bears the title "History of Scotland from the death of King James ... 1436 to ... 1561"--Dict. Nat. Biog. This section was first published by the Bannatyne club in 1830.

Vol. 1 and part of v. 2 edited by E.G. Cody; the editing of v. 2 completed by William Murlson. Published originally in 4 parts, 1885-95.
