Scope and content
Most of these letters are written just after the Raid of Ruthven, (August 23, 1582), when Sir George was ambassador into Scotland. Correspondents include: Dr. Robert Bellamie, Burghley, Walsingham, Warwick, Leicester and Sir Christopher Hatton. Also includes: 3 drafts from Sir George to Burghley, to the queen and to the lord chancellor [Sir Thomas Bromley], Leicester and Warwick, September 1582; a letter, autograph signed, from the nine "noblemen now resident with the king" - the earls of Gowrie, Glencairn and Mar, the abbot of Dunfermline, R. [Robert Pitcairn], lords Boyd and Lindsay, the master of Glamis [Sir Thomas Lyon], James Haliburton, Sir Lewis Bellenden - craving assistance from Elizabeth; September 18, 1582; and a letter, autograph signed from Henry, baron Hunsdon, governor of Berwick, to Robert Vernon, victualler at Berwick, together with a declaration and petition made by Vernon to Hunsdon concerning his financial position, 1575.
