Of the sixteen letters, fourteen are signed by Henry Howard, Earl of Nottingham. The editor; Sir David Dalrymple's, 'Advertisement' explains "The correspondence was conducted on the part of Cecil by Lord Henry Howard afterwards Earl of Northampton:".

The other two letters are signed by James VI.
