Folger-specific note
Brown calf binding, rebacked, with flower [sunflower?] stamped in gold on covers; printer's waste at front; vellum manuscript fragments bound at front and back possibly originally served as guards for endpapers, now lost. According to Richard W. Clement [Old English Newsletter, vol. 22, Spring 1989], the vellum fragment at back (also cataloged separately) is from an 11th century Anglo-Saxon manuscript - that at front is from a later manuscript. Winfried Rudolf identifies the older fragment as from the Gospel of Mark [The Library, 18.4 (December 2017), 405-417]. Provenance: inscriptions: on t.p.: "Ben. Smythe propr. est hic liber 3 1679" [altered from 1660] and "Jno Grimault 1802"; on printer's waste opposite t.p.: "Thomas Gryffyn hys book"; on N8v: "John Bowyer his booke"; on fore-edge running vertically: "C. Lee [?]" and on lower edge: "42"; Harmsworth copy.
