Note
Inscribed at lower left beside the pearl bracelet: "Countess of Southampton".
Versions: According to Strong, this is the only type of the countess of which multiple images exist. Although the original has not been identified, he feels it is possibly by van Somer. There are two versions showing her seated, three-quarter length: the one at Welbeck Abbey shows her turned to the viewer's left, the one at Sherbourne Castle to the right. Two other versions show the figure more than slightlyhalf-length, turned to the right, with her right hand touching an ornament at her breast: one is again at Sherbourne Castle and the other in the National Portrait Gallery, London.
Title from Pressly.
