Condition
A long zigzag tear running from Aumerle's cloak down through his legs and ending below the Duke of York's left knee was repaired in 1987
There is a strip measuring 1.5 centimeters along the bottom edge of the picture that was originally left unpainted, as was the case with Smirke's Awakening of King Lear (no. 58). At some point after this area was filled in, the painting was annotated in the lower right corner, "T. STOTHARD RA 1801"

Provenance: Commissioned by Alderman John Boydell for the Shakespeare Gallery; sold by lottery 28 January 1805 and won by William Tassie; sold by Christie 20 May 1805, lot 9, as "The Duke and Duchess of York and Aumerle-finely drawn and coloured," bought by Henry Tresham, R.A., for 10 guineas (£10.10.0); Knott's Art Repository, 55 Yorkshire Street, Oldham (this information derived from printed label at top center of frame); purchased by John Anderson, Jr., from Messrs. Robinson & Fisher, London.

John Anderson, Jr., sale, American Art Galleries, 6 April 1916, lot 18, as by Stothard, $110 plus 10 percent commission, Morris acting as agent.
