Note
The title is written in ink above the picture, however, Hogarth has been crossed out and Zoffany is written above it.
The item is traced from an engraving which has sometimes been found prefixed to mezzotint which has been credited by the Brit. Mus. Cat. of Eng. Brit. Ports. to Hogarth. Fitzgerald, in The Life of David Garrick credits Zoffany with the design.
According to the BMC the mezzotint was engraved after a painting by Hogarth, the engraver being W.J. Ward and published by J.W. Southgate in 1829. The BMC entry reads concerning the key: "A key-plate prefixed to an account of the original picture by G. Daniels, identifies...the persons represented." The Folger has a copy of the engraved key plate (ART File G241 no.27) and a portion of the engraved mezzotint (ART Vol. d45 no.181). Highfill's Biog. Dic. notes that the original painting was actually by Alessandro Longhi, rather than Hogarth, and may be a depiction of Garrick in a Venetian salon.
Item is housed in an extra-illustrated copy of Fitzgerald's Life of David Garrick.Illustration is found in Vol. II pt. II, facing p. 295. Fitzgerald's discussion of the picture is found on page 295.
