Summary
Bust portrait, profile to left, ruff at collar. The expression on the face and the shape of the hairline is similar to the head in a painting by Benjamin Wilson of Garrick and Mrs. Bellamy as Romeo and Juliet (for photo of painting see ART File G241 no.83 copy 1). Another painting, in the Garrick Club, copied after this Wilson painting depicts just the head and shoulders of Garrick, in profile to left, as Romeo, similar to the etching (see Matthews cat. no. 440)
Note
On wove (?) paper, labeled in brown ink, upper right corner.
On verso, in pencil, center: "under"/"right" ; upper right: "2"; lower left: "1".
Formerly attached to a mat with three other drawings of Garrick, now encapsulated together.
Depiction of Garrick's face resembles an etching in the FSL attributed to Benjamin Wilson. The etching shows the upper torso and head of Garrick, to left, vignette (see ART File G241 no.95 copy 3). Etching is listed as Garrick as Romeo in Harv. Cat. entry no. 284 under Garrick's name.
Sketch was formerly attributed to Thomas Gainsborough because of its provenance, however there is no evidence to link the drawing to Gainsborough and the attribution has been refuted. Drawing is similar to a portion of an etching after a painting by Benjamin Wilson.
