Summary
Bust, profile to left, depicts face only, not the entire head. Profile resembles the profile of Garrick found in engraved portraits in the Folger collection.
Note
On laid paper (cut), horizontal chain lines.
Removed from a mat containing three other sketches of Garrick now encapsulated together.
On verso in pencil: "Top"/"2".
Sketch was formerly attributed to Gainsborough due to its provenance, however, there is no evidence to connect it to Gainsborough's hand. The handwriting is dissimilar to samples of Gainsborough's and the attribution has been refuted.
The Mr. Grignion who was supposed to own the mask is possibly Charles Grignion who engraved two portraits of Garrick, one by Hogarth, the other by Hayman.

Original version
Original: Charles Grignion.
Provenance
Provenance: Drawing was purchased by the Folgers, along with three other sketches of Garrick, from J. Pearson and Co., London, January, 1924. The items are listed in the Pearson catalog in a lot of items relating to Thomas Gainsborough. The catalog does not claim them to be by Gainsborough, however, and the entry reads: 93 [.9] Garrick (David). A series of 5 original and contemporary pen and ink portraits of Him. When the drawings arrived there turned out to be only 4, the fifth being an engraving which Pearson neglected to send.
