From dealer's description: "ortraits of five artisans as old-age pensioners 7 Mühl, Johann Reinhold (1631-92) portrait engraver & goldsmith. Etched portraits of five retired Nuremberg artisans dressed as old age pensioners representing a former cobbler, tanner, locksmith, tinker & baker in care of the 'Twelve Brothers House' at the Carthusian monastery. 4 etchings with artist's monogram dated 1682. Plate impressions 11 x 7 cm including legend; 2 with short margins, 3 without margins are mounted on old handmade paper. The 'Twelve Brothers House' was founded in 1388 by Conrad Mendel, a rich Nuremberg merchant as a retirement home for old craftsmen in need. In 1681 Mühl was appointed manager of the foundation and took the opportunity to make small portraits of pensioners in uniform; four of the portraits offered here include architectural details of the foundation in the monastery. Some portraits may have been commissioned by descendants of the pensioners, but most sitters were the artist's contemporaries drawn from life Sebaldt Reitter, a tinker & pewterer, aged 63, died 1691; Eberhardt Roming, a baker aged 81, died 1689; Georg Sauer, a locksmith aged 58, died 1684; Hans Schalck, a cobler aged 73, died 1687. It remains unknown how many of such portraits exist; none are recorded by Hollstein." Ordered from Hünersdorff Rare Books, D9784, 2024-11-25, email quote.
