From dealer's description: "8. GUERARD, Nicolas. [Collection of curious stamps]. Paris, Guérard, [1657-1663]. Folio; a collection of plates including one manuscript title, and 188 engraved plates most of which signed in the copper plate ‘à Paris chez F. Guérard’; bound in 19th century pink boards, calligraphic lettering piece on upper cover, flat spine. An important collection of satirical and humorous engravings containing series of illustrated proverbs, word games and riddles, shouts from Paris reflecting the humour of the time, and gallant scenes with great detail on the costumes of the period, including within oriental settings. At the end are notably 6 plates of rebus, and 10 plates of characters and grotesque scenes published by Martel, after drawings by Jacques Callot. Despite the indication on the manuscript title, Lagniet’s name does not appear on the plates. French draughtsman, illustrator, copperplate engraver and artist Nicolas Guérard was born around 1648 and died in 1719 in Paris, where he had lived since 1680. His son (Nicolas Guérard fils, or Nicolas Guérard II) engraved Les Cris de Paris. He was a pupil of Chauveau, and also worked for a time with Le Pautre and Adrian Van der Carbel. Contents: 1. Proverbes moraux et joyeux, 64 plates (including the set ‘quatre saison de l’age’). 2. Scènes de moeurs et cris de Paris, 68 plates (with a set of 16 prints on Harlequin including the plate ‘La Loterie d’Arlequin’). The plate ‘Jeu à deviner’ with corner torn affecting some letters). 3. Prints on wedding and other gallant subjects, 15 plates. 4. Véritables cris de Paris (one plate defective with large corner torn), 12 plates. 5. Rébus, 6 plates. 6. Suite after Jacques Callot (Paris, chez Martel), 10 plates. 7. Suite of 8 planches depicting morals, signed in the copper plate V. Mander, or N. Fletin. 8. Gallant scenes, by N.
