Ordered from Maggs Bros. Ltd., D9528, 2021-09-20, Cat. 1516, item #3. From dealer's description: "Binding: 153 x 88mm; Text: 147 x 83mm. Contemporary linen binding with a tapestry-stitch design of a coat-of-arms and crest in their proper colours within a banded frame and in the outer border an inscription. The edges of the book-block are parcel-gilt and gauffered with a pointillé design of foliate tracery on a stained background. The border inscription, also in black tapestry-stitch, starts at the head of the front cover then runs around the foot of the spine and up the back cover to the head of the spine: “HERE IS Ye WELL WHERE WATER | FLOWES TO QVENCH Ye HEATES OF SIN HERE IS | THE TREE WHERE TRVTHE DO | TH GROWE T| O LEADE OVR LIVES THEREIN THERE IS NONE ABOVE HIM Yt FEARE IN Ye | LORD ECC XXV: X: [? WI:] | LF: [or IF:]”. Arms: per pale argent and sable, a chevron engrailed between three rams’ heads erased all counterchanged, horned or, a bordure argent and sable counterchanged bezantée [not engrailed gules bezantée]. Crest: on a wreath of the colours, a ram’s head couped argent, armed or. Both the arms and crest are charged with a crescent gules for difference [normally marking a second son]. Beside the arms are tassels suspended from foliate mantling. In the upper corners of the front cover are apparently a crowned double-heart and a ?heart suspended on a staff with a triangular roof; in the upper corners of the lower cover are a butterfly and snail. Condition: The linen cover has worn and split at the joints partly exposing the edges of the pasteboards and some of the tawed leather slips; a little rubbed at the board-edges and there is slight damage at the tail of the spine and the lower headband is slightly loose; the first sheet and sheet Ii in the Bible have sprung from the sewing. Otherwise, in good unrestored condition. Contains The Holy Bible (STC 2261; British Library & Cambridge UL only); [SPEED (John)].The Genealogies recorded in the Sacred Scriptures (STC 23039F.2; Bodley & Cambridge UL only); The Whole Booke of Psalmes (STC 2583.3; British & Foreign Bible Society [at Cambridge UL] & Washington Cathedral). A rare example of an English 17th-century embroidered binding with an armorial design and a very rare example of one incorporating a text as part of the design."
