Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "[Heraldic Manuscript]: A Catalogue of the five Conquerors of this Island and their Armes, viz. the Britaynes the Romanes, the Saxons, ye Danes and lastly the Normans and of their succession. [Fol. [7] recto: A Catalogue of the Armes belonging to England, with the causes of alteracõn hereof frome the range of Sainct Edward ye Confessor until this pñt day Ao Domini 1606.] [England, c.1606]. A beautifully executed heraldic book, notable for its fine gold work and vivid strap work frames. The manuscript tells English origin stories and gives a history of royal heraldry, in a way which suggests it was didactic literature intended for a well-born youth. In its execution, it seems very clearly the work of a professional, either a herald or a calligrapher-artist. We believe the manuscript to be intact, as it has the same contents that it had in the later seventeenth century when it (or a copy) was transcribed by an antiquary (BL Stowe MS 681). A historically prized volume, our manuscript was in libraries including those of the famous bibliophile fifth Duke of Marlborough (1812 catalogue; White Knights Sale 1819) and probably the diplomat and co-founder of the Royal Asiatic Society Sir Gore Ouseley (1770-1844)."
