From dealer's description: "Edwin Booth as Hamlet, a minature watercolor by Ethel Webling. This is one of the most stunning images of Booth I've seen. Painted circa 1870s. Dimensions matted five and a half by four and a half inches with image two and three quarters by two and a quarter inches. Ethel Webling was well connrected in Victorian theatrical circles and was noted for her theatrical paintings; the Folger has her extra-illustrated Twelfth Night, painted in the margins, and the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust has her extra-illustrated Julius Caesar as performed by Herbert Beerbohm Tree at Her Majesty's. Provenance: early presentation inscription to the reverse; later in the collection of Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh; Leigh to a British actor early 1960s; to the present owner."
