From dealer's description: " William Marshall’s Personal Archive from Shakespeare On Love The eminent African American actor William Marshall was among the first Black actors in America to play leading Shakespearean roles at major venues. He played Othello three times during the 1950s, including at City Center in New York and in Central Park for Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival. The British theatre critic Harold Hobson praised his 1962 Othello at the Dublin Festival as “the best Othello of our time.” Marshall later played Othello three times more and made a video of the play. Other stage appearances include The Green Pastures on Broadway and a one-man show as Frederick Douglass. He enjoyed a substantial career, as well, in film and television, winning two Emmy awards. This archive consists of material related to Shakespeare On Love that Marshall retained. William Marshall's promptbooks for two episodes of the PBS program Shakespeare On Love, in both of which he played Othello. Together in a ring binder, both promptbooks heavily annotated by William Marshall in red pen and pencil. The first promptbook is 89 pages, and the second is 97 pages. The episodes were filmed on December 20 and 21, 1978 and aired originally on June 9 and 16, 1979. Also included in the archive are six eight by ten inch black and white photographs of William Marshall as Othello and the cast. There is related material, including a Production Calendar, Cast List, Staff List, a letter from the program's host, Steve Allen, to William Marshall, the opening sequence for the program, and several additional items. Other characters from the episodes with Marshall as Othello include Hamlet, Iago, Romeo, Shakespeare, and an actress who played multiple roles, including the Dark Lady. Most of the material was drawn from Shakespeare's plays and sonnets." Ordered from Michael A. Morrison, D9706, 2024-01-12, email quote.
