Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Rare first French edition of one of the earliest books on stenography, illustrated with 2 folding copper plates. Originally published in Latin at Frankfurt-am-Main in 1678, this book is considered the earliest independent German manual on stenography. The Paris edition of 1681 includes both Latin and French versions on parallel pages. The author descended from a noble Scottish family and was born in Prussia. He became widely known as the publisher of a shorthand system, which owed much to Thomas Shelton's Tachygraphy (London, 1635), known chiefly at the present time for its use by Samuel Pepys in writing his Diary. The French version exhibits the greatest divergence from Shelton's method, including the adoption of simple signs for several alphanumeric characters. It contains a long dedication in Latin and French to Louis XIV and includes an appendix on processes of cipherment. Binding rubbed, caps missing. Modern title and date labels."
