Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "[WILLIAM AND MARY]. MOORE, Samuel. THE PROCEEDING TO THE CORONATION OF THEIR MAJESTIES KING WILLIAM AND QUEEN MARY From Westm[inste]r Hall to Westm[inste]r Abby 11. Apr. 1689. ‘Sam Moore fe:’ [London]: Imprimatur. Norfolke & Marshall. [1689]. £ 1500 Original etching, 53 x 44.5 cm, with central fold; lightly browned to outer margin and with a few minor tears, evidence of once being tipped in to an album on verso. Scarce and wonderfully detailed original etching depicting, in six rows, the procession of the coronation of William III and Mary II, from musicians at the top left to Yeomen of the Guard at the bottom right, with the King and Queen in the bottom row. ‘Moore, Samuel (fl. 1680–1720), draughtsman and engraver, appears to have been employed at the customs house in London. He designed and engraved two of the plates for Francis Sandford’s magnificent History of the Coronation of James II … and of … Queen Mary (1685) and the plates in the Coronation Procession of William and Mary. George Vertue’s notes imply that he thought Moore to have been the inventor of the medley, a trompe-l’oeil montage of imitations of various drawn, written, and printed materials. He presented one of these, deceptively copying various prints, to Robert Harley while the latter was speaker of the House of Commons between 1701 and 1704. Medleys subsequently became quite fashionable. Moore also engraved some costume plates. Beyond this intriguing report very little is known of the artist’s life and work.’ [ODNB]" Ordered from Pickering & Chatto, D9643, 2023-05-01, Cat. "Royal Coronations, Processions & Ceremonies", List 242, item #4.
