Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "29. DAVID DOMENICO. La forza della Virtù. Dramma per musica da rappresentarsi nel Teatro Malvezzi l'anno 1694. - Bologna, per gl'eredi d'Antonio Pisarri, 1694. 4°; 82 pp., 12 large folding etched plates; without last blank. 18th-century paper boards (reused) covered with brocade paper with stump works depicting deer among flowers and grapes over a gilt background (rear joint very lightly worn). Light waterstain to first two leaves; reinforced gutter to pp. 17 and 18 and to folding lines of some of the plates; rare occasional foxing, margins slightly short. Very rare first illustrated edition of the libretto composed by Domenico David for the opera "La forza della Virtù" performed at Teatro Malvezzi in Bologna in 1694. In this publication, the first printed example of multipoint perspective appears for the first time in the history of scenography. It was an extraordinary innovation: by interrupting the spatial continuity between stage and audience, it offered spectators a brand new experience with a more complex and dynamic view of the scene, allowing them to be involved in the performance from many directions. Marcantonio Chiarini (c. 1652-1730), a painter from Bologna and set designer of the wonderful baroque scenes, was the first to introduce to the stage this invention, which can be seen in one of the beautiful twelve plates engraved here by Antonio Buffagnotti (1660-after 1715), the one titled "Prigione". This innovation, also referred to as 'scena d'angolo', had appeared for the first time in Ferdinando Galli Bibiena's (1657-1743) 1711 treatise, "L'architettura civile preparata su la geometria e ridotta alle prospettive". "La forza della virtù" had already been staged in 1693 in Venice, its libretto printed without any illustration by Nicolini. The music was by Carlo Francesco Pollaroli (1653-1723), but for the edition printed in Bologna was newly composed by Giacomo Antonio Perti (1661-1756). Allacci 375. Sartori 10875. Sonneck 526. Gaspari V, 396. Frati 8208."
